It was after 5pm on Saturday afternoon when Vaitogi village police spotted the body of Nu’umia Dudah Ioane, 21 who was swept into a cave under the rocks when he fell into Vaitogi waters on Friday evening.

Dudah, a Department of Health Inspector by profession, was also an athlete who was always involved in sports; he played on a cricket team, volleyball, football, rugby and also was a team player in Vaitogi’s soccer team, Vaitogi United.

He’s a graduate of Tafuna High School class of 2012 and is the son of Mele and Nu’umia Ioane of Vaitogi. He is the youngest of the couple’s children. Described by his friends as someone who fights for what he believes in and will not go down without a fight, he was described as having a strong personality and very outgoing.

Samoa News arrived in Vaitogi village, in the area called the Pisisami by Vaitogi villagers, around 2:30pm, Saturday and the Vaitogi Village police, along with members of his family were still looking down at the cliffs for signs of the young man.

Tia Ah-Lin and Alisi Leone were among the people who had accompanied Dudah the night the incident occurred. Tia told Samoa News that Dudah had been in a drinking session earlier with two other men who came to the Pisi while she was there with Alisi.

Alisi and Tia told Samoa News, something appeared “off” with Dudah, who then jumped into the ocean. However, Vaimapu O’Brien, Dudah’s uncle does not for a second believe that Dudah jumped. Instead, he believes he may have slipped and fallen into the ocean.

Alisi said, “when Dudah was in the ocean, it wasn’t really rough, but then three big waves struck Dudah, who then hit the rocks and appeared unconscious. I ran and fetched the angel ring, threw it down to him but he wasn’t able to grab it and then I came back and rang the bell indicating to the village that someone fell into the ocean,” said Alisi.

According to Tia, one of the men jumped in when Dudah was unresponsive, but when he got down there, Dudah’s body could not be seen and he came back up and that’s when members of the village scattered all over the Pisi looking into the ocean for Dudah.

Eteuati Palau told Samoa News that it was early Saturday morning around 2am when his body resurfaced, however because it was dark it was unsafe for someone to jump into the ocean to bring him ashore; and then he disappeared again.

While at the scene, O’Brien contacted Commissioner of Public Safety, William Bill Haleck seeking to know what happened to the diving team that was supposed to be diving near the area.

The uncle, who was not happy with the response, then contacted DPS Lt Faimasasa Malaefono who stated that at 2:30pm, the Marine Patrol Police had to refill their gas for the boat, however when they arrived at the motor pool, it was already closed, so they had to go looking for someone to reopen the motor pool to get gas, and by the time they finally got gas, it was too late, and therefore, they were going to resume the search on Sunday morning.

Fire fighters with the Department of Public Safety’s “Search and Rescue” team were also in the area, and as soon as the body was spotted, two Vaitogi men jumped into the ocean to hold his body to make sure he would not be swept under the rocks.

About ten minutes after the two men jumped into the ocean, a big wave struck one of the men and he landed on the rocks and was unable to go back out to assist the one man who was still holding on to the body.

One of Dudah’s uncles told Samoa News that it was very unpleasant of the search and rescue team to just stand around, while the Vaitogi men jumped into the ocean to bring up Dudah’s body.
