Uman is a city located in Cherkassy region in central Ukraine. It stands on the banks of the Umanka and Kamenka rivers.

On the territory of present Uman and its suburbs, there are traces of ancient sites of the late Paleolithic, Tripoli culture, the Late Bronze Age, Chernyakhovsky culture and the Kievan Rus epoch. Near the city, there are burial mounds of Scythian times.

In the 12th century, the Tatar-Mongol hordes occupied the region and, in the 14th century, like most of other Ukrainian territories, it was ruled by the Lithuanian-Russian state.

At the end of the 16th century, the area was colonized by Poland. The name of the town derives from the river Uman, the first record of it refers to 1497.

The name “Uman” is found in the documents of 1616. In the 17th century, the town became a fore post in struggle with the Tatars. The Uman Cossack regiment was formed - one of the largest in Ukraine (about 3,000 Cossacks).

In 1768, the Uman Massacre occurred when the Cossack rebels Maksym Zalizniak and Ivan Gonta captured the town during an anti-Polish uprising.

In 1793, after the second partition of Poland, the right-bank Ukraine was joined to the Russian Empire. The town became a part of the Russian state, a town of Kiev gubernia.

In 1796, the park “Sofiyevka” was created. It was a masterpiece of garden and park architecture. The Polish engineer Ludovic Metstel designed it. A large Jewish community lived in Uman in the 18th-19th centuries.

The World War II was a big challenge for the city. Uman defense in the beginning of the war was one of the tragic pages in the history of the city.
