A wave of low pressure will slide across the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, while a Pacific system impacts the Northwest.

An area of low pressure will drift east northeastward along the western and central Gulf Coast. This system will draw moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, which will lead to the development of rain and thunderstorms across much of the Gulf Coast and the Deep South. Stormy conditions will spread northeastward over the Deep South during Thursday evening. Just to the north, a separate area of low pressure will transition eastward over the northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley. This system will bring light to moderate snow showers to the upper Intermountain West, the northern Plains and the upper Midwest. In addition, cold air will continue to stream across the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes. This interaction will support lake effect snow showers over Upstate New York and western New England. A mixture of rain and snow will affect southwest New York, northern Pennsylvania and northern Ohio.

Out west, light rain and mountain snow will linger over the Pacific Northwest before a robust Pacific system moves onshore over the Northwest. This system will usher moderate to heavy rain across northern California, Oregon and Washington. Heavy snow showers will also impact the Cascades and the northern Sierra Nevada. A dry weather pattern will persist across the Southwest on Thursday due to high pressure over the eastern Pacific.
