The handloom sector plays a very important role in Indian economy. Weaving is one of the largest economic activities after agriculture having the capacity of absorbing a greater number of manpower .Handloom weaving is a way of life and intensely linked with Assamese culture and heritage. Handloom Industry of Assam is known for its rich traditional of making a great variety of handloom products. Weaving plays a very important role in the socio-economic development of the state. During the region of King Naranarayan the great spiritual and religious leader Srimanta Sankardev and his disciple Sri Madhabdev wore “Brindabani Bastra” of 120 cubits in length and 60 cubits width and embroidered on that the eventful life history and activities of Lord Sri Krishana from his birth till the killing of King Kansha by him. Weaving has been a way of life in Assam since time of immemorial. Assam is a state where there is full of hereditary handloom weavers performing handloom activities. In Assam the skill to weaves was the primary qualification of a young girl for her eligibility for marriage. A soldier was sent off for betel with a dress material made overnight. It was considered as important as his weapon. In the Nalbari. there are almost 1,12,091 nos of weavers area engaged in weaving and related activities. Most of the weavers are expert in traditional weaving and they are using country loom, having no improved designing equipments which restricts them from going for higher quality production and also it is true that most of the weaver are not capable of purchasing modern equipment and modern looms due to lack of fund. Only few of them took formal training course for both skilled and ordinary weaving styles.

Baharghat, Kaithalkuchi and Tihu for Production and sale of Handloom fabrics through rural weavers for their income generation. 4.) O/O the Instructor, Handloom Training Centre, Chamata, Khakhrisal and Douslasal to impart technical training to the trainees for their self employment.
