Description: One of the convents of Russian Orthodox Church located in Nizhny Novgorod Region on the left bank of the Volga River near Makaryevo.

Zheltovodsky Makaryev (Makaryevsky) Convent (formerly Monastery) of the Holy Trinity is a convent of the Russian Orthodox Church located on the left bank of the Volga River near the settlement of Makaryevo in Lyskovsky District of Nizhny Novgorod Region. Makaryev Convet was founded by the missionary Saint Makary in the early 15th century as a men's monastery by Zholtoye (Yellow) Lake that name Zheltovodsky comes from.

In the early 19th century the Volga River shifted its course absorbing Zholtoye Lake. Monastery walls are now threatened by the waters of the great river with its annual spring floods.

In 1439 Makaryev Monastery was burned by Tatar Khan Ulu Mukhammed. In 1620 Makaryev Monastery rebuilding was initiated and the first wooden Cathedral of the Holy Trinity was consecrated in 1624.

World known Makaryev Fair took place every summer for more than two centuries outside of the walls of the monastery. It was one of the most famous and important merchant fairs in the Eastern Europe. Makaryev Fair had been remaining near by Makaryev Monastery for a long time by 1816 when accidental fire destroyed nearly all its buildings so the fair was moved to Nizhny Novgorod in 1817 and became known as Nizhny Novgorod Fair .

Today Zheltovodsky Makaryev Convent of Holy Trinity is the place a lot of pilgrims come to. On the occasion of the Feast of Saint Macary in August 2007 the Saint's head was transferred to Makaryev Convent from Nizhny Novgorod Pechersky Ascension Monastery where it had been previously kept.

There is no any ferry routes from Nizhny Novgorod to Makaryevo now. There was a speed hydrofoil crafts service in the past that connected Nizhny Novgorod to Makaryevo since it is rather far away from Nizhny but it does not work for now.

1st way — by car/bus — Nizhny Novgorod (the right side of the Volga River) — Bor (over the Volga River) — then to Makaryevo along the left side of the Volga River; this way is good if you have a tight schedule and so need to be on time; the distance is about 100 kilometres and it should not take more than 2 hours (if no traffic jam around the bridge over the Volga Rive that is rather often on weekends in Spring-Summer-Autumn time); there is the intercity bus N585 from Kanavinskaya Bus Station (located in the Lower City of Nizhny Novgorod, ulitsa Sovetskaya, 20a, +78312462021,+78312442021 (most likely Russian only), working hours 6-00 to 22-00) that services this route (6-40, 9-00(?) - Saturday, Sunday(?) only); please note that you would need to ensure the timetable and the bus number are actual if you prefer this way.

2nd way — by car/bus then by ferry — Nizhny Novgorod (the right side of the Volga River) — Lyskovo (still on the right side and opposite Makaryevo) — then Makaryevo with the Lyskovo-Makaryevo ferry; this way is better if you like to see and take a picture of Makaryev Monastery from the Volga River side — great view; but in this case you depend on the bus from Nizhny Novgorod to Lyskovo and the Lyskovo-Makaryevo ferry timetables; you can drive to Lyskovo with a car (about 100 kilometres and 1,5 hours) to save time; there is the intercity bus N510 from Lyadova Bus Station (located in the Upper City of Nizhny Novgorod, ulitsa Studentcheskaya, 15, +78314335598 (most likely Russian only), working hours 6-00 to 21-00) that services this route (8-00 Monday, 9-10, 10-40, 11-40, 12-30, 14-50, 16-30 Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, 17-55); Lyskovo-Makaryevo ferry timetable (2013) — 6-15, 8-15, 12-15, 15-15, 18-15 (40 minutes) and Makaryevo-Lyskovo ferry timetable (2013) — 7-00, 9-00, 13-00, 16-00, 19-00, +788314951493 (most likely Russian only); please note that you would need to ensure the timetable for the ferry is actual; the ferry starts its service in Spring and finishes it in Autumn.

We hope this will help you with getting to Makaryevo. Please feel free to contact us if something is not clear or if you need any further assistance.
