Bandar Mahshahr in Iran suffered a torrid heat index that rose to a red hot 164 degrees at the start to the weekend. This weather news was stated by a number of sources, including the Weather Channel on July 31.

Mathematically speaking, the American heat index value is determined by taking the actual temperature and then adjusting the number by factoring in the dew point or humidity, which is what the intense heat feels like to a human being. This much akin to the concept of the wind chill factor which makes an affected place feel colder than the actual temperature because of an accompanying and intensely cold wind.

Accweather meterologist Anthony Sagliana explained the meteorically high heat index phenomenon in the struggling city of Bandar Mahshahr. He states that a persistent "strong ridge of high pressure. over the Middle East" in general that hung around almost all of last month made for an "extreme heat wave in what many would consider one of the hottest places in the world."

Sagliana summed up the experience of spotting the staggering temperatures on Twitter. This expert admitted in his post that this was "probably the most incredible" reading of its type the accomplished professional had "ever seen."

According to the English version of Al Arabiya News on August 2 (or August 1 in North America), the 100,000 or so residents of Bandar Mahshahr, which is situated on the Arabian Coast, were no doubt melting under these extreme conditions which tend to run higher than is typical experienced elsewhere inIran. This is due to area winds that blow off nearby waters.

Considered to be among the most "extreme readings ever [documented] in the world," the 164 degrees that were clocked in were calculated to come up with a weather rating in this Iranian city starting in the late afternoon on Friday. In fact, Mahshahr Airport's observation area started monitoring what was happening temperature wise in southwest Iran starting on Thursday, when the heat index formula showed a sweltering 159 degrees.

And so, as Bandar Mahshahr registers a heat index of 164 degrees the day before Aug. 1, the Iranian city remains red hot. and not in a good way. Very warm wishes to this sweat filled community with hope that the destination gets relief much sooner than later.
