In our continuing tour of Oman's beaches, we focus this week on the picturesque seafront at Mahout on the Al Wusta coast. Here, peaceful fishing villages, white-sand beaches, swarms of birds in flight and fishermen hauling their boats ashore, all add to a gentle setting that's characteristic of this expansive coastline.

Each visit to the Al Wusta (Central region) reveals a new phase of modernisation that underlines the region's emerging appeal for investment and development. The wilayats are endowed with a natural appeal that make them potential tourist destinations in their own right. Tourists already flock to the tranquil beaches, which provide ideal settings for camping and leisure.

Our tour starts from Wilayat Mahout. Arriving at Hij — the wilayat centre — we refuelled and headed south towards Flim coastal village, some 19kms away. Located on the fringes of Mahout Bay, this tiny village is seldom affected by the winds that lash much of the rest of this stretch during the khareef. The villagers live in simple houses made from date palm branches and timber. A modern housing scheme for these villagers is now under development.

  • From Bid Bid-Sur Roundabout drive along the Sharqiyah road for 72km to arrive at the turn to Sinaw near Shell filling station. Sinaw is 62km away.
  • Sinaw is the best point of entry into the Al Wusta region for those coming from either Al Dakhiliyah or Al Sharqiyah regions.
  • From Sinaw, drive 250km to the turn that will take you to Hij in Wilayat Mahout Centre, which is a further 18km away

The Island of Mahout lies just across from Flim. There are many boats operated by local villagers that ferry, for a small fee, the island's residents, as well as tourists. A cruise around the island can also be arranged.

From Flim, we drove to Khaloof coastal village. The route traverses a shallow, muddy stretch until you arrive at this popular fishing spot with its expansive white sand seafront. A haven for sea-gulls and other birds, ornithologists and tourists have also reported sightings of falcons in flight.

A curious sight is the appearance of a pinkish hue along the beach, which is attributable to the presence of small snails scattered all along the stretch. Thus, the moniker 'rosy beach' for Khaloof. Just 6kms away is Khaloof coastal village where fishing and herding are the principal occupations. A new blacktop linking the village to the rest of the road network now enables tourism and economic activity to flourish in this area.

At low tide it is possible to drive along the beach. The route veers inward bypassing rocky stretches along the beach. Some 25kms down this stretch is Ras bin Toot, which appears like a sail from the sky. Although a popular fishing area, tourists are urged to be careful when driving in this area because of the slushy salt pan (sabka) that it turns into after a shower.

More spectacular landscapes are revealed as you drive westwards and then southwards. Ras Halaat, another fishing ground, has some fine beautiful beaches. With rocky hillocks along the beach, the route is less motorable. Turn westward at this point and head for the main road linking Sinaw with Wilayat Duqum past the villages of Salutiyaat and Saraab

A new road network that connects the coastal villages and tourist attractions in Wilayat Mahout with other wilayats in this region will contribute greatly to the growth of tourist in the region.

  • A 4x4 vehicle is necessary, as the route traverses sandy beaches and rocky stretches.
  • The use of more than one 4x4 vehicle, with spare tyres to boot, is advisable.
  • Towing cables and other equipment can be handy.
  • Take enough potable water along.
