Madhupur is a city in Deoghar district of Jharkhand. Madhupur has the sweetness for tourists for its laidback nature, the simple people and its quaint tourist attractions that have their own share of charm draws them to the place. Its sweet waters, fresh air and ebullient atmosphere have gained the city the name, ‘The Health resort of Jharkhand’.
What brings Madhupur from its folds of idyllic stupor to the arena of heritage sites is the most revered place called ‘Gangaprasad Bhawan’.
Gangaprasad Bhawan was the home of the prolific Bengali educator and the first Indian Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee. Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, also known as the ‘Tiger of Bengal’ was perhaps the most emphatic figure of Indian education. He was a man of great personality, courage and academic integrity and towering administrative ability. He was knighted in 1911 for his contribution to science in India. Sir Mukherjee was responsible for the foundation of the Bengal Technical Institute in 1906 and the Calcutta University, College of Science in 1914. The Calcutta Mathematical Society was also founded by Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee in 1908. He was the father of famous Syama Prasad Mukherjee the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
On another plane the commercial erudite Bollywood too left its mark on the soil of Madhupur. Its green landscape dotted with sal, simul and mahua trees led Basu Chaterjee to direct the blockbuster of the 70’s Chit Chor" starring Amol Palekar and Zareena Wahab in its environs.
The city is also known for the world famous crockery factory La Opala Ltd. which is the only one of its type in India.
The city is surrounded by two monsoon rivers that inundate the region and keep the city green and fresh.
Deoghar is the nearest biggest city which is 15.9 kms from Madhupur, Dhanbad, is just 54 kms away and Bokaro is 87 kms away. The nearest airport to Madhupur is at Ranchi which is at a distance of 240 kilometers.
