Avondale's newest installment of public art pays tribute to Kaizu, Japan, Avondale's "Friendship City."

The newly finished mural at Friendship Park depicts scenery of the Avondale Japanese Kaizu Garden element at the park, on McDowell Road between Avondale Boulevard and Dysart Road. The garden's Japanese gazebo and stone pagodas were gifts to Avondale from the people of Kaizu nearly 10 years ago.

Goodyear artist Edward Buonvecchio painted the mural. The $11,000 artwork was commissioned by the Avondale Municipal Art Committee.

"The Friendship Park mural was a great experience," the 59-year-old muralist said. "I would get compliments and words of encouragement every day from people using the park for fitness, sports or for relaxing by the pond. As people drove by in their cars, they were always honking their horns, giving the thumbs up and yelling kudos. Some motorists would actually stop and introduce themselves to me while getting a close-up view of the mural."
