LA is so LUCKY to have Master Hailin Fu to open a shop in your city. Master Hailin Fu has been a top-tier artist in China for the past 2 decades along with having over 300 students (he basically has students in every province) in China. When we learned that he had opened a shop in Los Angles (we were hoping in Canada), we were so fortunate enough to be able to book an appointment. We have been unsuccessfully trying to book Master Hailin Fu for a tattoo for the past 2 years when he comes to Toronto, Canada for a tattoo convention.   My husband has been wanting a tattoo from Master Hailin for so long due to his expertise in Asian artwork (as showcased by his portfolio). Upon learning about an availability for an appointment, we decided to fly to LA just to go see Master Hailin.

Upon entering, the shop (Hailin Tattoo) provides a unique experience with a modern elegance combined with traditional chinese design. Even though Master Hailin does not speak alot of english, he has a personal translator along with several of his students that are at the shop from open to close.

At first, we were worried that there would be a translation issue. But, we only had to sit down and explain his idea for a couple minutes before Master Hailin already knew what my husband wanted. My husband had wanted chinese warriors (Lu Bu & Ma Chao) from the Three Kingdoms era on his back as well as a dragon and fou dog across his shoulder and chest.

Due to Master Hailin's knowledge of chinese history, he made the suggestion to actually have Lu Bu and Dian Wei. He explained that Dian Wei was a stronger/powerful character than Ma Chao in chinese history and also the contrast in character looks (because Lu Bu and Ma Chao would look similar) would make a better design in the tattoo. My husband decided to go with Master Hailin's suggestion since we trusted Master Hailin's extensive knowledge of his Chinese mythology and proper placements for feng shui. He actually has a massive bookshelf full of books on chinese history/mythology along with art books. He stated that the back tattoo would take 4 days and dragon and fou dog would take one day a piece.

Little did we know that Master Hailin actually draws the tattoo by free hand (no stencils). He explained that by drawing free hand, the tattoo/art  can conform to the curves of each individual's body which a stencil cannot.

In terms of sessions, we had expected long days and long sessions over the next 6 days since my husband's tattoo would be a whole back and both chest areas. However, Master Hailin actually works amazingly fast. Basically everyday only composed of three to four 1 - 1.5 hr sessions with 30-60 minute breaks in between. Master Hailin completed the whole back in 4 days and each chest piece (dragon and fou dog) was completed in one day.

Remember that a tattoo is basically forever. When getting a tattoo, you really pay for what you get. Master Hailin is a true artist and as his portfolio can attest, a true master at his craft. The little details that Master Hailin puts in the design of hair, weapons, armours, etc makes each one of his tattoos, a work of art. My husband is so impressed by his work that he still has an ear-to-ear smile everytime he looks at his tattoos.
