Its capital Manizales, has an altitude of 2200 mtrs, with an average temperature of 18 C. Its economy is based on industrial and agricultural activity, specially the production of coffee, citrics, sugar cane, yuca, maiz, frijol, and potatoes.
In Caldas you can visit coffee farms that offer accomodation, food and recreation for the visitors. The towns of Supia (RUTA DE LA PANELA) and Mamato (RUTA DEL ORO) are one of the most picturesque.
It is the biggest coffee production area in the Triangle of Coffee, and most of the institutions related to this important product including the Fabrica de Café Liofilizado, the Coffee Research Center, and the educational center Fundacion Manuel Mejia.
The Eje Cafetero is the name by which Colombians know the tourist destination formed by the three departments of Caldas, Quindio and Risaralda. Right now there is a lot of work being undertaken in this area to make it an international tourist destination incresaing the number of foreign visitors to what has been called the Coffee Triangle.
This park is one of the most outstanding natural regions of the country. It is recognized as one of the biggest water reserves, and home to unique species such as the PERICO DE LOS NEVAODS and COLIBRI DE PARAMO.
It has a total area of around 58300 hectares and limits with the towns of Villamaria in Caldas, Pereira and Santa Rosa de Cabal in Risaralda, Salento in Quindio, and Villahermosa, Libano, Herveo and Ibague in Tolima.
In the park you can find 5 volcanic craters: Tolima, Quindio, Paramillo de Santa Rosa, Santa Isabel and Ruiz. The temperatures varied greatly according to the latitude in between –25 C up in the snowy peaks to 18 C in the lowest areas.
It has a total area of 1019 hectares, in between 1700 to 2300 mtrs over the sea level. The average temperature is 19C.
This small area of BOSQUE NUBLADO is home to the biggest number of frogs in the country, including more than half the species registered in the Cordillera Central. Even more outstanding is the number of endemic species, with 71% of the species not found anywhere else.
