Glitzy malls, swanky apartments, eye catching skyscrapers characterize the city of Gurgaon which is situated in the Gurgaon district of the north Indian state of Haryana. It is one of Delhi's four major satellite cities. Gurgaon is basically a commercial and business city and the hub of many multinational companies. Strategically located, the National Highway linking Mumbai and Delhi via Jaipur passes through this city. The nearest access point is the airport at Palam, which is located at a distance of 17 km. from Gurgaon. The railway station is located at the extreme corner of the city, which connects Rewari on one side and Delhi Cantonment on the other. Geographically, the town is located between 28.47В° North latitude and 77.03В° East longitude at a height of 220 metres (721 feet) above mean sea level.

In Hindu mythology it is believed that Gurgaon was the ancestral village of Guru Dronacharya, guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Indian epic of Mahabharata. The name was given in this context where Guru refers to Dronacharya and 'gaon' the village. Gurgaon was initially the part of the North Western Provinces but in 1861 it was transferred to Punjab.

The India census report published in 2001, Gurgaon had a population of 173, 542. Males and females constitute 54% and 46% of the population respectively. In Gurgaon, 13% of the population is less than six years of age. The literacy rate of Gurgaon is 77%, which is higher than the nationwide average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 81% and the female literacy rate is 73%.

Renowned as one of the most prominent outsourcing and offshoring hubs of India, the offices of a plethora of multinational companies like Genpact, Dell, Accenture are located here. Several IT and pharmaceutical firms are located here. The city boasts of world-class shopping malls, restaurants and entertainment facilities, which is a major source of attraction for outsiders.

With thousands of professionals residing and working in the city, the population has a high purchasing power. This has an impact on the culture of the city, which is becoming increasingly global with every passing day. This reality contradicts with the middle and the lower- middle class people living in the outskirts of the city under adverse conditions. Some of the major places of interest in and around the city are Sohna, which is visited for its hot springs, Nuh, situated about 45 km. south of Gurgaon is famous for the tomb of Sheikh Musa which has shaking minarets. Pataudi, Ferozpur Jhirka and Farukhnagar are other towns, which are worth visiting. Other frequently visited places are Cawn Sarai, Nehru Stadium and Kamla Nehru Park. The Temple of Sheetla Mata is also a major attraction in the city.
